A Parable from the Parson
Taxes
If death and taxes are the only certainties in life, you can figure we spend more time and
energy trying to avoid them than anything else. The first makes the insurance companies
rich; the second politicians.
A news program recently covered a political rally. Nothing unusual there. But, for a
fleeting moment, and with no comment from the reporter, we saw a man carrying a sign
which read, “God hates taxes!” (Since I make every effort to be non-political, I will refrain
from mentioning which party the rally was for.)
It’s not the first time I’ve seen a sign claiming divine endorsement of somebody’s
strongly held opinion. Years ago, there was the billboard which declared: “Jesus was a
vegetarian.” I didn’t have to look far in the Gospels before I found:
... He said unto them, “Have ye here any meat?” And they gave him a piece of a
broiled fish… (Luke 24:41-43 KJV)
But, back to taxes. Does God hate them? If He does, why did he command so many
taxes in the Old Testament? There were actually several tithes, not just a straight ten
percent of your income. Then there was the temple tax. I love the way Jesus and Peter paid
that one! (Matthew 17:24-27)
Now, hear the word of the Lord:
Render therefore to Caesar the things which are Caesar’s… (Matthew 22:21 KJV)
Paul didn’t seem to hate taxes either. See Romans 13:6, 7.
Bless the Lord real good,
Parson Jim

Kid’s Kolumn
We missed a lot of you guys on Sunday. I know it's summer and everyone is busy, but
remember God is never too busy for you.
Thanks to Mr. Ken for the Children's Moment, as always he did a great job. Next
Sunday, I will be bringing the Children's Moment, so I need your prayers and support. The
subject will be "Hats" - it will be fun so please come help me.
I will also be teaching Children's Church and our subject is "Jonah". I know you have
heard about him and the 'big fish’.
We will also be learning a new "rap" song. Yes, you heard right - we will be learning a
new "rap" song to present to the congregation on the 5th Sunday of August.
Don't miss the fun and love of God! Have a Blessed Week! Mrs. Nancy
Pastor Jim shares this letter from the Northeast Area office:
Dear Friends at Mineola FCC:
It is hard to believe that we have already concluded the first half of the year, isn’t it? If
“times flies when we’re having fun”, then we must be having a lot of fun!
You may remember receiving a statement of giving for your congregation this past
April, for the first quarter of 2010. The purpose of this letter is to update that statement to
include your contributions to the NEA for the second quarter. Our records show that your
congregation has contributed $655.02* for January—June 2010. If there are any
discrepancies with your records, please let us know as soon as possible.
We are grateful to announce that, for the first half of the year, our income and
expenses have been very close, but, as of the end of May, income exceeded expenses by
approximately $200. As you can see, we are running a very tight budget as a result of the
large cuts made last year. Know that we remain grateful for your faithful and continued
support of the ministry of our Area. Unfortunately, only 30 of the 65 congregations of the
NEA (46%) have been able to contribute in the first half of the year. We do expect that
figure to improve in the second half, but it shows how really important your help is in
maintaining our Area ministry. Thank you for helping us to help you, our camps,
conferences, and all the various other ministries in which our Area is involved.
Sincerely, John Cunningham (NEA Moderator)
*FCC NOTE: Our check for June 2010 ($145.09) didn’t reach them by the cut-off date
because we send Outreach disbursements the last week of each month.
