The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) began as a movement for
Christian unity, on the American frontier. The idea of overcoming
divisions in Christianity by returning to a simpler pattern, found in the
New Testament, was extremely popular. Many churches called
themselves "Christian Church" or "Church of Christ." Individuals chose
to stop identifying themselves by denomination, desiring to be merely
Christians or disciples.
In 1832, two like minded groups came together in Lexington, Kentucky.
With a handshake and a prayer, they announced that the "Christians" and
the "Disciples" were now one group of churches. This was the first major
church merger in America. Today, this denomination is still committed to
the goal of First Christian Church actively involved in the local Ministerial
Alliance, community worship services and charitable activities, and a
program of sharing Communion known as "Churches Sharing Jesus."
The requirements for church membership are simple.
Faith in Jesus Christ
Christian baptism
A public confession, "I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God."
Beyond this, there is no complicated creed or doctrine. While there are some differences among
congregations, the following are common to these churches:
We allow each church to govern itself and to call its own pastor.
We read the Bible and preach from it.
We baptize by immersion, but we respect your baptism if done another way.
We celebrate the Lord's Supper (Holy Communion) every Sunday.
We allow you to receive Communion, regardless of what Church you belong to.
We are trying to follow Jesus, and we invite you to come along.
First Christian Church meets every Sunday
8:30 Lite Service
9:30 Sunday School
10:45 Traditional Worship Service
Bless the Lord real good!
